The Federal Trade Commission will lead an investigation to determine whether Apple's newly started iAd mobile advertising network unfairly restricts rivals like Google from extending their own mobile marketing efforts across the iPhone platform. Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that discussions between the FTC and the U.S. Department of Justice ultimately determined that the former is the agency best equipped to spearhead the probe. Last week, The Financial Times first reported the FTC and DOJ were formulating plans to launch an antitrust inquiry.

Sprint not changing data pricing after AT&T's move
Sprint Nextel currently has no plans to change its mobile data pricing structure in the wake of AT&T Mobility's decision to move to a usage-based model, according to the carrier's CEO Dan Hesse. Under AT&T's new plan, customers who buy smartphones and iPads can pay $15 per month for 200 MB of data or $25 per month for 2 GB of data, with extra charges for additional data. Current AT&T smartphone customers can keep their $30 per month unlimited data plan.

Sales of Apple's iPad tablet topped 2 million less than 60 days after the device went on sale in U.S. retail stores. The iPad, which made its debut April 3, is now available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Apple said it will add nine countries in July and more throughout the year.

ABI: Verizon will become data traffic leader in 2011
ABI Research's latest analysis of the mobile data market sheds some interesting light in the wireless carriers and their device roadmap. ABI reports that AT&T's network had the most data traffic in 2009 and that will likely continue to have the most data traffic in 2010 thanks to the iPhone and AT&T's large number of smartphones on its network. But by 2011, ABI predicts that Verizon will overtake AT&T and become the data traffic leader because of increasing penetration of Android devices and other similar high-data use smartphones.
